Six Sigma Background and History

Six Sigma is an established, well accepted framework, methodology and process originally developed to reduce defects or errors in a manufacturing or service business that focuses on enhanced customer satisfaction and profits through efficiencies leading to cost reductions and improved quality.  Six Sigma methodologies are used to identify problems, prioritize and accumulate data for analysis and find the source or cause of the problem and develop solutions to address underlying issues. This validated and accepted practice can be used to solve health and performance related issues as well.

More specifically, Six Sigma is a problem-solving framework with various methodologies that use data, measurements and statistics to identify the vital few factors that will dramatically increase efficiencies, decrease waste and increase results leading to customer satisfaction. In humans it can be used to optimize performance, change habits and increase measurable results leading to client satisfaction. More client satisfaction will translate into more referrals.  It is a framework that can be used to solve many different types of process-based problems and as such is a useful framework for solving health based problems as well.

The Six Sigma methodology first used to solve operating issues was initially developed at Motorola because technology was becoming so complex that long-held views about acceptable quality levels were no longer adequate. In 1989 Motorola set a five-year goal: a defect rate of 3.4 parts per million (3.4 / 1,000,000)—which equates to a quality level of "six sigma", essentially as near perfection as you can get in terms of process outputs.  The success of Motorola’s Six Sigma initiative changed American concepts of quality and the means of measuring it. Other companies noticed their success and the Six Sigma revolution took hold, spurring an entire industry around the teaching, consulting and application of the concepts.  Today universities around the world teach and certify individuals in the Six Sigma Method, using a system of colored belts to designate mastery of the methodologies similar to the way the designations are used in the martial arts.

The Six Sigma framework has been used to improve business operations globally in virtually every business sector including the health industry and can be adapted to methodically identify, quantify and develop solutions leading to improved health, fitness and performance for an individual as well. Six Sigma Fitness™️ is the only known validated, subclinical, diagnostic framework for creating a scientifically valid process to addressing an individual's heath and fitness objectives and developing a solution based approach to optimize results for non-licensed health practitioners.
