Six Sigma Fitness™ Program - "Striving for perfection in Lifestyle, Nutrition and Movement by driving poor quality and low standards out of your personal habits."

Six Sigma is about facts—it is not about gut feel, instincts, or what you believe may be the cause of an underlying problem.  There are no sacred cows and the data dictates the direction and the support for the solution.

What does the movie "Moneyball" and Six Sigma Fitness™ have in common?

Before I reveal the answer to this riddle, let me give you a quick recap from the earlier part of our Six Sigma Fitness™ series...

Definition: Six Sigma is a production or process enhancing methodology that aims to reduce errors or defects in a business manufacturing line, service, process or practice to achieve goals of enhanced profitability or increased customer satisfaction through higher quality products.

Six Sigma Fitness™ twists the variables a bit to make "You" the focus rather than the process. You are your own "life manufacturing line" that makes energy daily, produces various types of physical, emotional and spiritual output, and has successes and failures that run through your daily life. We all have common goals to increase our energy, our output or performance, our successes and many other individual goals that may be personal to you only. Six Sigma Fitness™ identifies theses goals and objectives, quantifies them and analyzes them so that they can be improved upon and controlled.

Six Sigma Fitness™ distills the sum total of our lives into discreet aspects of data that can be analyzed, identified, refined and enhanced to result in improvements in everything we do from love and career to output and performance.

Ok, So what does Moneyball and Six Sigma Fitness™ have in common?

They both use data to make themselves more successful by letting the numbers dictate their direction and decision making processes. Its all about trusting the data. Collect the numbers and the world begins to unlock itself to you.

Have you seen the movie "Moneyball" with Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill? I know... you are so sick of Brad Pitt's perfect looks that you missed it, but who doesn't like Jonah Hill? He is "every man", except in this movie he "is the man". Really, if you haven't seen it, rent it or find it on cable, its worth watching. If you like the movie and you like the pioneering methodology they used you will love Six Sigma Fitness™.

If you haven't seen it, here is an excerpt from the Washington Post:

"Published eight years ago, “Moneyball” chronicled the cash-strapped Oakland Athletics pioneering use of sabermetrics in their attempt to compete with Major League Baseball’s wealthiest ballclubs, and the movie, starring Brad Pitt as Oakland General Manager Billy Beane, explains the player-evaluation process that every team, to some degree, now uses in roster construction. At the time of its release, the book had a polarizing effect, angering many veteran baseball people who surmised Lewis — and Beane — suggested stats could replace scouts."

"The Harvard-educated DePodesta was a key figure in the book, a numbers-crunching whiz kid who provided the blueprint for Beane’s then-revolutionary approach. Utilizing sabermetrics, he helped Beane acquire players who helped Oakland reach the playoffs five times in an eight-year span that ended in 2006. In that period, the Athletics had winning records every year. Other teams with similar financial limitations struggled to finish .500."

"Actor Jonah Hill did a fine job with the fictional character named Peter Brand, supposedly a composite of several Athletics assistants under Beane. In actuality, he’s DePodesta."

Sabremetrics is a term coined to describe the accumulation and analysis of statistical data for evaluation of baseball games. Think of Six Sigma Fitness™ as a version of "Moneyball" for human performance. Rather than just going on “gut feel” we go where the data tells us.

The key to achieving Six Sigma Fitness™ is the accumulation and analysis of hard data to identify the source or cause of the problems and be able to measure the effectiveness of the solutions.  Six Sigma is all about the metrics and reducing variation in the data that normally results in significant swings in health or homeostasis.  Reducing these variations from the norm or ideal is the key to sustaining health and fitness long-term.
