Framework Of Methodologies Applied

Although this framework of "methodology categories" applies to many different physiological aspects of a client's or athlete's program, such as movement or nutrition, it is easily applied to the overall goals and objectives or a specific subset of the program, such as their daily movement or workouts.  Essentially, these categories help the Coach / Practitioner in the Define phase of DMAIC, making it easier to pick and choose the methodologies that will be used in the entire Measurement, Analysis, Improve and Control process.

It creates a process in which the Coach / Practitioner can use a methodology to hone in on the “vital few” variables that will have the greatest impact on the result. This is also known as the Pareto principle (or the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity) which states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.

When explained to our instructors or for our future certification process it looks like a funnel that pares down from a large potential group of data into a specific and applicable group of data:

Essentially, the approach is similar to any formalized education such as college. A student declares their desire to be educated and in what major, which is essentially their objective or goal. Their college has determined the entire body of knowledge required to graduate from college for many different degrees, but only a subset of that knowledge is required to obtain their specific degree. Next they Assess you by using various scientifically validated systems such as SAT/PSAT/ACT to determine strengths and weaknesses and in which areas. Next they Screen your grades, jobs, social media and extracurricular activities to determine if you have all the requisite skills, habits, and lifestyle required to complete your curriculum objectives. Just before you start college, they will Test you to see if you can opt-out of some courses and or if you need to work on some basic skills such as writing or math before you can move on to more critical tasks required to reach your goals. This will also help you understand and establish the level of work you will need to put in to accomplish your goals. Lastly, they will Survey you or your parents during the process to make sure you have the environmental support required to meet your goals. This includes questionnaires to find out if you have financial backing, and if not, they will help get you loans. They will also make sure you have adequate quarters to live and sleep as well as a meal plan, because without that, you will never reach your goals. This is the basis of any successful framework, where we actually learn and change what we do and improve ourselves over time.

Although the specifics change to match the circumstances, the framework stays the same. When a coach or Practitioner is explaining the methodology to their clients as it relates to their programming for fitness, it is simplified and can look like this:
